SR 290 - Spokane River East Trent Bridge

Project News

Crews are beginning to restart construction after the winter shutdown on June 1, 2021.

Initial construction on the East Trent Bridge began Monday, March 9, 2020. The full closure for demolition and reconstruction of the East Trent Bridge began on June 1, 2020.

Several detours will go into place during construction.

  • Heavy truck traffic traveling eastbound I-90 who use the Hamilton St. off-ramp and need to go east on SR 290/Trent Ave. will be redirected to the Freya St. off-ramp then travel north on Freya St. to reach SR 290/Trent Ave. Trucks traveling westbound on SR 290/Trent Ave. will need to take Freya St. south to I-90 westbound.
  • Light vehicle traffic can use Martin Luther King Jr. Way around the bridge closure.
  • Alternate route for light vehicle traffic traveling southbound on Hamilton trying to go east on SR 290/Trent Ave. will need to to use Mission St. to Napa as a detour.
  • Those who bike, walk or roll can use the Iron Bridge located off Iron Court to the east and N. Superior St. to the west of the Spokane River.

The contract was awarded to Garco Construction, Inc. on January 31, 2019.

Needs & benefits

This bridge crosses the Spokane River just east of Hamilton Street in east Spokane.  This structure has been in service since 1910 and is well beyond its useful life. The roadway surface, bridge rail, and piers require continuing extensive maintenance and repairs.  As part of this project, the existing bridge will be demolished and a new bridge will take its place.  The new structure will meet all current design and safety standards.  Also, Trent will be re-surfaced from Hamilton to the new Martin Luther King Way roundabout at Perry Street.

The City of Spokane has an adjacent project: Martin Luther King Way/Riverside Drive

Construction began in March 2020 and is expected to continue through late 2023.
