SR 153 - Methow River Bridges - Structural Rehabilitation

Project news

Spring 2019

This three year P2 Structures Preservation project is retrofitting deteriorating bridge columns under seven bridges over the Methow River on SR 153 between Methow and Carlton in Okanogan County.

  • June, 2017, Stellar J. Corp. was awarded Contract #9112 for $612.995.00 - phase one. Construction on phase one ran from August to Thanksgiving, 2017.
  • May, 2018, Combined Construction Inc. was awarded contract #9259 for $1,772,998.00 - phase two.Phase two ran from June into November, 2018.
  • Phase three was advertised in January. Bids were opened on Feb. 27 and Contract #9388 was awarded to Hamilton Construction Co. for $1,109,096.00 on Mar. 6. Construction will resume as water conditions allow, likely in June.

Why is WSDOT rehabilitating these bridges?

  • The project is to preserve the structural integrity of the supporting columns holding up these seven bridges on State Route 153.
  • Columns under these bridges have delaminated, the concrete has weakend, show spalls with exposed rebar and/or have vertical hairline and narrow cracks.
  • Phase one retrofitted concrete columns on bridges #153/13, #15, #16, & #17.
  • Phase two addressed bridges #10, #14 & #20 by adding concrete collars in addition to the concrete repairs on the columns and horizontal struts between them.
  • Phase three will add the concrete collars to three bridges with columns that present the biggest environmental challenge as their footings are in the river.  The phase three work requires traffic closures that the earlier phases did not.  To install collars on the bridge columns with footings in the Methow River, the necessary equipment will have to be staged and worked from the bridge decks above instead of from the shore as was done in phases one and two.

The End Result

  • Preservation of the structural integrity of Bridges #153/10, 13, 14, 15, 16, 17 and 20.

Project Benefits

  • Stronger bridge structures less likely to suffer catastrophic failure from earthquakes and high volume river flow events.
  • Reduced maintenance costs.

  • Phase one started Aug. 7, 2017 and was complete in November.
  • Phase two started in June and was complete by Thanksgiving.
  • Phase three will start this summer and be complete this fall.
