I-405 - NE 30th St & NE 44th St Ramp Improvements - Completed May 2017

We improved the Northeast 30th and Northeast 44th streets on-ramps to northbound I-5 to reduce traffic backups onto city streets.

  • Crews built a retaining wall and added a second lane for metered traffic on the Northeast 30th Street ramp. The former HOV/carpool ramp was changed to a transit-only ramp.
  • The Northeast 44th northbound on-ramp was restriped to allow drivers to use a shoulder lane during posted peak hours, and crews moved the metering point closer to the I-405 merging point.

How you benefit

Improves safety
By metering all vehicles except transit on the Northeast 30th Avenue ramp, traffic is less likely to bunch up while merging onto northbound I-405, reducing dangerous driving maneuvers and the potential for collisions. Increasing the amount of cars that can wait on the ramp also reduces the potential for traffic backups on Northeast 30th and Northeast 44th streets, reducing the risk of collisions.
