Amtrak Cascades derailment near DuPont

Inaugural run of the new Point Defiance Bypass ended tragically 7:34 a.m. on Dec. 18

  • Train left the tracks at the Mounts Road overpass bridge and fell onto the southbound lanes of I-5 (carries 60,000 vehicles a day)
  • Involved 2 locomotives and 12 passenger cars - 77 passengers and 6 crew members - sadly, 3 fatalities, numerous injuries
  • Approximately 70 people transported to regional hospitals from train and roadway below

Multiple agencies came together for a coordinated response and recovery effort

  • WSDOT, WSP, Amtrak, Sound Transit, Pierce County, JBLM, local emergency responders, Dept. of Ecology, State Parks
  • Southbound I-5 reopened by 5 p.m. Dec. 20

Amtrak Cascades will not run on Point Defiance Bypass until positive train control technology is activated
