Roundabouts coming to State Route 524 at Locust and Larch ways

LYNNWOOD – Just like shoes and sunglasses, good things come in pairs. The same is true for the pair of roundabouts coming to State Route 524 in Lynnwood.

Starting Tuesday, July 31, Washington State Department of Transportation contractor crews with A-1 Landscaping and Construction, Inc. will begin installing two roundabouts on SR 524/Filbert Road at Larch and Locust ways in an effort to reduce congestion-related crashes.

Collision history
From 2011 through 2015, there were 81 collisions at these two intersections that injured 36 people. This was a higher collision rate than the state average for highways of similar size and capacity.

“A lot of people have moved into this area, and thousands use these intersections,” says WSDOT Project Engineer Mark Sawyer, “These two roundabouts will help keep residents safe on the road because they have a proven history of reducing collisions and keeping traffic moving.”

Nighttime and weekend work required
Contractor crews will perform most of the work during overnight hours, Sundays through Thursdays. There will also be two, separate full weekend closures of SR 524 at each intersection so crews can build the roundabouts, repave the roadway and install new signage. Sign up for weekly Snohomish County highway emails to be the first to know when those dates are announced.

The $5.1 million project is expected to wrap up in late summer.
