Northbound interstate reduced to two lanes near Southcenter Nov. 3-5

TUKWILA – The last of the weekend-long lane reductions on northbound Interstate 5 near Southcenter are finished, but one partial weekend closure is needed to complete #ReviveI5 work on a Duwamish River Bridge expansion joint.

Contractor crews working for the Washington State Department of Transportation will reduce northbound I-5 to the two left lanes from 8 p.m. Friday, Nov. 3, to 9 a.m. Sunday, Nov. 5, beginning near the I-5/I-405/SR 518 interchange to complete the work.

“This joint was built differently than what the plans showed, so it did not have some pieces we need to complete the replacement joint as scheduled,” WSDOT Project Engineer Mike Askarian said. “We only need a little more than a day to add these pieces and finish this work.”

Travelers should plan ahead
People traveling in the Southcenter area from 8 p.m. Friday, Nov. 3 to 9 a.m. Sunday, Nov. 5 should prepare for two open lanes on northbound I-5 and these ramp closures:

  • The on-ramps from Southcenter Boulevard and Interurban Boulevard.
  • The southbound I-405 HOV ramp to northbound I-5; all drivers will need to use the general-purpose on-ramp.

Know before you go

  • Allow extra travel time, particularly driving to Seattle-Tacoma International Airport.
  • Consider taking a carpool, vanpool or public transportation.
  • Use alternate routes like I-405, State Route 167, SR 99 and SR 509.
  • For the latest traffic information, visit WSDOT’s Seattle Traffic page, mobile app and @WSDOT_Traffic on Twitter.

Work continues
Crews plan to continue working on this section of northbound I-5 throughout the fall and winter, as weather conditions allow. Drivers should plan for overnight lane closures, when crews will replace and repair concrete panels, repave asphalt and replace guardrails.

Since work on this $31 million project began last spring, crews working on northbound I-5 have:

  • Repaved more than 4 miles of interstate between SR 516 and Southcenter.
  • Replaced about 400 12-foot by 15-foot concrete panels.
  • Repaved and replaced expansion joints at Interurban Avenue and the Duwamish River.

Work is scheduled to be complete in summer 2018.
