Drivers entering/exiting Woodinville should use detour routes; allow extra time

WOODINVILLE –The reopening of State Route 202/131st Avenue Northeast in Woodinville following a weekend closure has been delayed until 5 a.m. Tuesday, Aug. 1.

The highway between SR 522 and Northeast 177th Place /Little Bear Creek Parkway closed at 10 p.m. Friday, July 28 while contractor crews work on a fish passage project. It was scheduled to reopen at 5 a.m. Monday, July 31.

Contractor crews working for WSDOT have worked around-the-clock since Friday night building a buried bridge to improve fish passage in Little Bear Creek, which runs under SR 202.

Work on the new bridge is taking longer than expected and additional resources, including crews, were not available to make up time. WSDOT and its contractor, Olson Bros. Excavating, Inc., are committed to completing this challenging project.

"We know keeping the road closed an extra day is going to make things very hectic for drivers," said Washington State Department of Transportation Project Engineer Dave Lindberg. "Our best advice is to plan ahead and allow plenty of time to use the detour or other alternate routes whether you're trying to get in or out of Woodinville tomorrow."

Detour routes and delays
Drivers headed to and from Woodinville on Monday should plan to use the signed detour routes, alternate routes and allow extra time to reach their destination.

Closure details

  • Lanes will remain closed from the eastbound SR 522 ramps to north of Northeast 177th Place.
  • The SR 522 on-and off-ramps to SR 202 will remain open to drivers who wish to travel north on SR 202/132nd Avenue Northeast.
  • Drivers can travel a short section of SR 202/131st Avenue Northeast to access a local fast food restaurant next to the closure.
  • Travelers can follow posted the detour routes or choose alternate routes to and from Woodinville.
  • There will be no pedestrian access through the work zone until Tuesday, Aug. 1

Temporary lane adjustments when SR 202 reopens
When SR 202 reopens on Tuesday, drivers will see a temporary change to the road. The lanes will be narrower and the center turn lane temporarily eliminated. Pedestrians will be restricted to a 5-foot wide pathway on the west side of the highway. In the following weeks, the crews will return the highway to its original configuration.

Over the weekend, crews dug a 96-foot-wide, 30-foot-long and 7-1/2 foot-deep hole in the highway to place 20 bridge girders on 70 previously installed bridge columns.

The $7.5 million project helps WSDOT comply with a 2013 U.S. District Court ruling that the state must remove culverts that block fish passage under state roads.
