SR 548 - Kickerville Rd - Intersection Improvements

Project News

  • Crews from Tiger Construction have completed work ahead of schedule. This roundabout is now open to all traffic in all directions.
  • Crews will return to the area in a few weeks, following asphalt curing time, to apply permanent striping.
  • Travelers can sign up for email updates on this and other Whatcom County construction projects.

WSDOT crews will build a roundabout at the intersection of SR 548/Grandview Road and Kickerville Road to improve safety, reduce the severity of crashes and keep traffic moving.

Why is WSDOT building a roundabout?
A roundabout will improve safety at this well-traveled intersection by eliminating conflict points that are present at stop sign and light controlled intersections. While vehicles will need to slow down to navigate the roundabout, the waits will be less than when queuing behind signs or lights.

Needs & benefits

What are the benefits of a roundabout?

  • It reduces delay and improve traffic flow.
  • It is less expensive to operate than a traffic signal.
  • It is not affected by power outages.

What should travelers expect during construction?
Travelers should expect lane closures on SR 548, closures of Kickerville Road and commute delays during construction of this roundabout. Most work can happen during any type of weather so once construction begins, the work should move quickly. Changes to closure information will be updated online each Friday for the following week.

The End Result
This project will:

  • Increase safety for all travelers by lowering the risk of collisions.
  • Shrink delay times through this area therefore reducing air quality impacts and fuel consumption.
  • Provide a safe, smooth transition area between the heavily traveled SR 548/Grandview Road and the lower volume county road.

Project Benefits
Building this roundabout will allow all traffic to navigate this intersection safely and efficiently.
