I-5 - S. 272nd St. to S. Rose St. Seismic Retrofit - Complete November 2015

WSDOT seismically retrofitted eight bridge sections of Interstate 5 between South 272nd Street in Kent to South Rose Street in South Seattle.

Contractors added steel jacket columns around the bridge piers to reduce the risk that the columns will fail in an earthquake.

They also added girder stops to prevent bridge girders from sliding from side to side in a earthquake and support bolsters which provide a wider base for the bridge girders to rest upon.  

This work is part of the state's seismic retrofit program.

How you benefit

Improves safety
This retrofitting work brought these sections of I-5 up to current seismic standards.

Strengthening bridge columns, crossbeams and the girders helps keep drivers safer by reducing the risk of damage in an earthquake. Concrete columns are less like to crumble and bridge girders are less likely to slide off.

Economic incentive
Interstate 5 is the primary corridor for moving people and freight through Washington.

Seismically retrofitting the bridge helps reduce the risk that commerce will be disrupted after an earthquake. Ensuring the movement of people and goods will help the region recover faster.

WSDOT worked with cities throughout the project corridor to coordinate road closures and community engagement.
