I-405 – NE 8th St to SR 520 Braided Ramps – Interchange Improvements - Complete May 2012

This video explains how the new ramps work.

WSDOT built new multi-level "braided" ramps to separate vehicles entering and exiting northbound I-405 between NE 8th Street and SR 520 in Bellevue. The goal was to allow drivers to get to and from I-405 and eastbound SR 520 more safely and more quickly, thanks to new, wider ramps.

This project added a bypass lane for I-405 traffic headed eastbound to SR 520. A new ramp from the NE 10th Street bridge gives drivers direct access to SR 520 from downtown Bellevue. 

Project Timeline

  • Sept. 20, 2006:  WSDOT hosted a public scoping meeting.
  • May  7, 2008:  WSOT published the Environmental Assessment.
  • May 22, 2008:  WSDOT hosted the Environmental Assessment hearing.
  • Sept. 17, 2008: WSDOT published The Finding of No Significant Impact (FONSI).
  • Dec. 7, 2009: WSDOT awarded the contract to Atkinson Construction, LLC of Renton.
  • Winter 2009:  WSDOT began construction.
  • May 22, 2012: WSDOT cut the ribbon marking the opening of the new ramps, months ahead of schedule.

Cross GlyphImproves Safety
The addition of the new lane and ramps reduces the number of congestion-related collisions and eliminates the weaving from I-405 to SR 520. In addition, this project enhances local pedestrian and bicycle access with a longer, wider NE 12th Street bridge.
Car GlyphRelieves Congestion
Improves traffic flow by addressing back-ups on the highest volume ramp on the I-405 corridor: northbound I-405 to eastbound SR 520. Improves congestion on eastbound SR 520 in the vicinity of the 124th Avenue NE off-ramp, leading into the busy Northup business district in Bellevue. Reduces congestion on NE 8th Street, improving local access, circulation and operations in downtown Bellevue.
Leaf Glyph Protects Environment
WSDOT's I-405 Corridor Program team completed an Environmental Assessment (EA) for this project. The EA identified the project effects and mitigation opportunities, and covers numerous disciplines, such as noise, air quality, fish and wildlife, wetlands, and parks and recreation. Throughout the process, the I-405 team designed the project to avoid or minimize effects to the environment whenever possible.

Partnerships & Cooperation
WSDOT partnered with the City of Bellevue on the project design and worked closely with the hospital district to preserve key access points for emergency vehicles throughout the construction process.

The project was chosen as a critical shovel-ready project and created hundreds of jobs as part of the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act.

The project received $80 million in stimulus funding from the 2009 American Recovery and Reinvestment Act (ARRA). The funding advanced delivery to the public by approximately one year.
