Construction will reroute drivers and close I-205 for six nights

VANCOUVER – As summer draws to a close, construction work on a new interchange in Salmon Creek will crescendo to a finale of ramp changes, bridge demolition and interstate closures in September.

Starting Thursday, Sept. 19, drivers will use a new route to access northbound Interstate 5 while crews relocate Salmon Creek’s northbound I-5 on-ramp from its current location at Northeast 134th Street to the new Northeast 139th Street interchange.

Drivers will take Northeast 20th Avenue and Northeast 139th Street to enter I-5. This permanent change could result in long-term delays for local drivers until the project is complete in 2014.

“This will be one of the major growing pains of the project,” said Leon Winger, project engineer with the Washington State Department of Transportation. “Accessing northbound I-5 will be a little circuitous for several months until the new 139th Street interchange opens next year.”

The ramp switch-over will also result in some impacts for nighttime drivers on I-205.

On Monday, Sept. 23, crews will launch a series of overnight closures on I-205 while they demolish the existing on-ramp, which carries traffic over both directions of the interstate.

Demolition work will close both directions of I-205 between I-5 and Northeast 134th Street.

I-205 closure schedule

  • Monday, Sept. 23: Both directions of I-205 closed from 10 p.m. to 5 a.m.
  • Tuesday, Sept. 24: Both directions of I-205 closed from 10 p.m. to 5 a.m.
  • Wednesday, Sept. 25: Both directions of I-205 closed from 10 p.m. to 5 a.m.
  • Thursday, Sept. 26: Northbound I-205 closed from 10 p.m. to 5 a.m.
  • Friday, Sept. 27: Northbound I-205 closed from 10 p.m. to 5 a.m.
  • Saturday, Sept. 28: Both directions of I-205 closed from 10 p.m. Saturday to 10 a.m. Sunday

Crews will complete demolition work overnight to help reduce impacts to drivers. However, the final night of demolition work will continue until 10 a.m. Sunday, Sept. 29, and could result in major backups on the interstate and local roads.

“The most important thing drivers can do is plan ahead and try to minimize travel on Saturday night and Sunday morning,” said Winger. “Traffic volumes typically double between 7 a.m. and 10 a.m.; this is a travel window you’ll want to avoid if you can.”

Drivers can find more information including closure details and detour routes on the project website, and stay informed by signing up online to receive project email updates.
