(Editor’s note: Due to heavy rains this week, the scheduled closure of SR 520 eastbound lanes and Eastside ramps is canceled. Work will be rescheduled at a later date.)
Crews to complete previously postponed, time-sensitive work
SEATTLE – Drivers who cross Lake Washington should plan ahead to avoid potential delays this weekend, when eastbound State Route 520 closes for lane shifting. Westbound lanes will remain open.
The Washington State Department of Transportation will close all eastbound lanes on SR 520 between Montlake Boulevard in Seattle and 108th Avenue Northeast in Bellevue from 7 p.m. Saturday, March 23, to 5 a.m. Monday, March 25. Both SR 520 ramps at 84th Avenue Northeast and the eastbound on-ramp at 92nd Avenue Northeast will close at 10 p.m. Friday, March 22, and reopen by 5 a.m. Monday.
During the closure crews will shift the existing eastbound lanes to the south. The shift makes room for construction between eastbound and westbound lanes from Evergreen Point Road to 92nd Avenue Northeast. This work had been planned for March 15-18 but was postponed by wet weather, which prevents lane striping.
“After we were rained out last weekend, we quickly rescheduled this work, which is critical to keep the job moving forward,” said Brian Dobbins, construction manager for WSDOT. “We coordinate closely with other projects in the region, and with the I-90 express lanes closed Saturday, we’re keeping SR 520 open through the heaviest Saturday traffic.”
Sound Transit crews working on the East Link Extension light rail project will also close the Interstate 90 express lanes from 11 p.m. Friday, March 22, to 11 a.m. Sunday, March 24. The Seattle portion of the I-90 express lanes will reopen by 6 a.m. Sunday – eastbound to Mercer Island only – in time for the Mercer Island Half Marathon.
March 22-25 closure details
Drivers can use I-90 or alternate routes around Lake Washington. All of westbound SR 520 will remain open. Eastbound SR 520 between Interstate 5 and Montlake Boulevard and east of 108th Avenue Northeast will remain open, as well.
Closure information and detour maps are online. Night work is planned, so residents near the work zone might hear construction noise.
SR 520 Eastside project overview
Crews working on the Eastside Transit and HOV Project are widening SR 520 to six lanes between Medina and Bellevue, rebuilding interchanges, constructing highway lids and transit stops in the center of the highway and installing fish-friendly culverts. In 2010, WSDOT awarded a $306 million design-build contract to Eastside Corridor Constructors, a joint venture of Granite Construction Company and PCL Construction Services. The completed Medina-to-Bellevue corridor is scheduled to open to traffic in December.
