Drivers should plan for nightly lane and ramp closures July 9-12

BELLINGHAM – A number of rough and bumpy spots on Interstate 5 and Guide Meridian (State Route 539) in Bellingham will be smoother by next weekend. Maintenance crews plan to repair and repave several areas next week, and that means nightly lane and ramp closures for drivers.

“We’re taking advantage of this nice weather to get out and do a bunch of paving,” said Tony Hernandez, Washington State Department of Transportation maintenance superintendent. “We’ve heard from drivers that there are some bad potholes, and we’re going to hit the spots that are in the worst shape.”

WSDOT maintenance crews plan to repave a number of areas: the dip in the northbound direction of Guide Meridian at the Bellis Fair Parkway intersection; the potholed on-ramp to southbound I-5 from the Guide Meridian; and a number of rough bridge transitions in both lanes of southbound I-5 between the Guide Meridian and Lakeway Drive interchanges.

On Monday night, July 9, drivers should be prepared for lane closures on Guide Meridian and lane and ramp closures on southbound I-5 at the Guide Meridian interchange. Detour routes will be in place to help drivers around the closed on- and off-ramps.

Tuesday through Thursday nights, July 10-12, drivers should be prepared for single-lane closures on southbound I-5 between the Guide Meridian (exit 256) and Lakeway Drive (exit 253) interchanges.

Drivers can find more details and closure hours for this work online on WSDOT’s construction update report.
