CHIMACUM – Jefferson County citizens concerned with congestion and safety on state routes 19 and 20 should plan on making a stop in Chimacum next Thursday.

WSDOT presents final recommendations on an 18-month study of the two highways during an open house from 3:30-6:30 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 19 at the Chimacum Middle School Commons located at 91 W. Valley Road.

The recommendations, a prioritized list of short-, mid- and long-range projects that can compete for state transportation funds, were compiled during the study conducted by WSDOT, in collaboration with Jefferson County Public Works, the City of Port Townsend and users of the routes. Its goal is to identify ways to increase safety and reduce congestion.

“Grassroots collaboration is the key here because it gives us a much better idea of what users of the route want and need,” said Nazmul Alam, project manager. “We’ve had great participation from community members throughout this study. They provided excellent input that helped shape the final study recommendations that we are going to share on Nov. 19. This two-way discussion will translate into highways that are safer and have less traffic issues.”

The corridor plan outlines a 20-year vision for development of SR 19 and the section of SR 20 that leads to the Port Townsend ferry terminal. The study recommends strategies for improving existing roadways and mapping out the future transportation systems on these two state routes.
