LYNDEN – Crews reopened a two-mile stretch of the Guide Meridian (SR 539) at 3 p.m. Sunday, July 26, a day earlier than planned.
“We know this closure was a big inconvenience to everyone,” project engineer Chris Damitio said. “Our contractors Max J. Kuney, KLB and Granite Paving worked diligently 24 hours a day to get this work done and the highway reopened as soon as possible.”
Crews closed the Guide Meridian south of Lynden, between Pole and River roads, Thursday night to install two 25-foot-wide by 130-foot-long box culverts under the road.
One culvert was installed just north of the Nooksack River near River Road, and the second was installed south of the river near the overflow bridges.
Now that crews have completed the culvert work, they will turn their attention to completing the Pole Road roundabout. Crews will close East and West Pole roads at their intersection with SR 539 starting at 7 p.m. Sunday.

The culvert installation is part of a larger project to widen more than 10 miles of the Guide Meridian to four lanes to improve safety and reduce congestion for the more than 21,000 drivers who use the road daily.
