SHINE – The exact SR 104 Hood Canal Bridge opening time is still unknown because, as WSDOT experienced today, testing work is unpredictable. Crews spent the day working through the draw span check list’s 1,400 electrical, mechanical and hydraulic items but a few boxes still need a check mark before the final draw span testing can begin. The primary challenge today was aligning the pontoons ends correctly each time.
“Joining the new bridge components to the existing west half adds another set of challenges to completing this very technical bridge that requires extensive checks and adjustments to ensure its safe and reliable operation,” said Scott Ireland, Hood Canal Bridge Construction Manager. “We are focused on opening the bridge as soon as possible by completing draw span adjustments now in order to help ensure the 20 cycle tests will go well once we start.”
Draw span testing is now scheduled for Wednesday. Before the Hood Canal Bridge can reopen to traffic, WSDOT and Kiewit-General must complete 20 consecutive error free openings to meet operational standards that demonstrate a safe and reliable draw span. Even if crews have 19 successful tests and then the draw span doesn’t work, they must begin again with a count of zero.
Accomplishing this provides a clear view on when the bridge will be ready for 16,000 vehicles that cross it daily. A draw span work and testing progress update will be provided Wednesday.
After the bridge is open, WSDOT will continue to provide transportation services for the day the bridge opens and one day after to help travelers return to their normal commute. The Port Townsend to Edmonds car ferry will end soon after the bridge is open. Drivers are encouraged to plan ahead by visiting www.HoodCanalBridge.com or by calling 1-877-595-4222.
The Hood Canal Bridge opening will be celebrated June 6, 2009 at two venues: 11 a.m., ribbon-cutting, Salsbury Park, Kitsap County; noon-8 p.m. Bridge Opening Bash, Port Townsend.
