SHINE – The Washington State Department of Transportation invites you to celebrate the successful replacement of the east half of the SR 104 Hood Canal Bridge, the world’s longest bridge over saltwater.
Two June 6 celebrations highlight both the accomplishment of building this world-class bridge and the role it plays in the economic and social success of the region. A variety of events and venues will showcase the unique food, maritime flavor, arts, music and outdoor activities that are easily reached by crossing the Hood Canal Bridge.
The festivities, sponsored by the City of Port Townsend in partnership with WSDOT, Kiewit-General, Port Townsend Main Street, the Port Townsend Chamber of Commerce and Olympic Peninsula communities, are as follows:
11 a.m. –The official ribbon-cutting ceremony at Salsbury Point Park in Kitsap County recognizes and extends appreciation to community members, community leaders, the bridge contractor and local elected officials. Live music provided by the Chimacum Band.
Noon – 8 p.m. – Port Townsend welcomes Peninsula neighbors and visitors from the east side of the Hood Canal Bridge with free outdoor music, food and special events:
• RECOGNITION: Mayor Michelle Sandoval, Paula Hammond, county commissioners
• HISTORICAL: A small parade of vintage cars dating from when the bridge first opened
• NEW: Native American Baskets Exhibit and a special exhibit of Hood Canal Bridge historical photos and hourly presentations
• FOOD: Port Townsend Farmers’ Market
• FUN: Classic Mariner’s Regatta and "Swoon Under the Full Moon in June" block party
• MUSIC: Dock of Bay concert ($10), free Delta Rays and Freddy Pink concerts
• ARTS: Gallery Walk and PT Shorts in the Pope Marine Building
