SEATTLE – Drivers heading to downtown Seattle and Capitol Hill should prepare for up to a year-long closure of the off-ramp from northbound Interstate 5 to Olive Way beginning Monday, May 18 at 10 p.m.

This is the first in a series of ramp closures as crews working for Sound Transit prepare the ground beneath I-5 to make way for the tunnel boring machine they will use to construct the 3.15-mile light rail tunnel extension between downtown Seattle and the University of Washington.

Drivers wanting to reach Olive Way from northbound I-5 should exit at Madison Street and follow the signed detour.

Crews will also make the following temporary closures on Monday, May 18 and Tuesday, May 19 to place barriers around the work zone:

  • The right lane of northbound I-5 between Cherry Street and Olive Way
  • The on-ramp from Cherry Street to northbound I-5

Each night the lane and ramp will close at 10 p.m. and reopen by 6 a.m. the following morning.
