If it doesn’t rain, expect busy week near SR 20/I-5 interchange

Rain was the story this week around our region. That meant that a lot of work got postponed and now needs to be rescheduled. Combined with the new work scheduled for next week, this means that things are going to be very busy near the interchange.

Please continue to use caution during the day and at night while crews make their way closer and closer to wrapping up this project.

  • Monday and Tuesday, May 11 and 12, from 10 p.m. to 5 a.m. – Crews will pave on SR 20 between Haggen and Pulver roads.
  • Wednesday, May 13, from 11 p.m. - Crews will close the southbound right lane of I-5 to pave the approach to the new off-ramp, and will permanently close the existing off-ramp.
  • Thursday, May 14, 5 a.m. – Crews will open the new off-ramp and bridge that connects to the SR 20 and Garrett Rd intersection.
  • Thursday, May 14, from 10 p.m. to 5 a.m. – Crews will close access to and from Avon Allen, Pulver and Garrett roads north of SR 20 to pave the section between the intersections and railroad crossings.

Quiet Cove crews digging their work on SR 20

Crews working south of Sharpes Corner on SR 20 are digging out the highway to lower the road between the two ends of Miller Road. We need to remove more of the rock hillside Tuesday night, which will require another closure of the highway with a detour via pilot car. Remember, that means you will be delayed if you travel through here after 8 p.m. Traffic comes to a halt for 20 to 30 minutes right when they close the highway. So expect the longest delay right around 8 p.m.

  • Tuesday, May 12 from 8 p.m. to 4 a.m. – Crews will close SR 20 between the north and south ends of Miller Road. Traffic will be detoured down Miller Road with a pilot car. The road and detour route will be closed for approximately 15 minutes right around 8 p.m., and then the detour route will be opened. Heaviest delays continue to be between 8 and 10 p.m.
  • Monday, May 11, from 7:30 p.m. to 5:30 a.m. – Crews will close one lane of SR 20 between Lunz Road and Campbell Lake Road to install waterline.

Rain delays SR 538/Riverside Drive intersection closure again

Crews have delayed the weeklong SR 538/Riverside Drive intersection closure for a couple of weeks, this time due to a forecast of continued rainy, cool weather. The closure was delayed last week by rain, and had been rescheduled to begin this Sunday, May 10. We’re hoping the third time will be the charm.

The weeklong intersection closure will now start at 9 p.m. Sunday, May 31, and end by 6 a.m. Monday, June 8.

We’re starting work on SR 9 north of Sedro-Woolley

You may have noticed that crews have installed bright orange signs and fence along SR 9 north of Sedro-Woolley: the tell-tale signs of construction. That’s because we’re about to make some safety improvements to the highway between Martin Road and Thunder Creek.

We’re going to straighten the road, widen the lanes and shoulders, and improve the Martin Road intersection. And Burlington Northern Railroad will build a new railroad crossing with a warning signal.

What can you expect in terms of lane closures and delays? Crews plan to work days, and most of the work will be off the road. The work shouldn’t cause too much disruption to your daily commutes.

Interstate 5 lane closures continue in south Skagit County

If you’re making travel plans for Mother’s Day weekend, you’ll want to factor in lane closures on I-5. We currently have the left lane of southbound I-5 closed around the clock near the Skagit/Snohomish County line, and it will remain closed through next week. There are three lanes in this area, so we don’t expect the around-the-clock closure to cause too many delays. Crews will close an additional lane at night in the same general vicinity on Wednesday and Thursday, May 13 and 14.

If your travel plans take you into Bellingham, we will have one lane of southbound I-5 closed around-the-clock all weekend near Northwest Ave (exit 257). We do expect some delays here.

Want to know what else is closed this Mother’s Day weekend outside of Skagit and Whatcom counties? We’ve got all the details on our travel alerts page and construction update reports.
