SHINE – Commuters who rely on the water shuttle to get across the Hood Canal should pay close attention to the weather forecast today and make their travel plans accordingly.

If the wind hits later today as predicted, water shuttle service between Lofall and South Point could be delayed or canceled. High winds are expected to arrive about 2 p.m., with the heaviest gusts between 7 p.m. and 11 p.m.

"With the six-week closure of the bridge and bad weather, it's been a rough couple of days for those who need to cross the canal,” said Dave Ziegler, principal engineer for the Hood Canal Bridge project. “The decisions we’re making are based on keeping the traveling public safe. That’s our top priority.”

Commuters can stay informed about the status of the Lofall-South Point water shuttle service by calling 511 or visiting http://www.hoodcanalbridge.com/.

WSDOT encourages people to review their transportation options to determine the best route. Additional “Get around” options include taking the Port Townsend/Edmonds evening ferry or the Port Townsend/Keystone ferry; flying from Port Angeles to Seattle; driving around on alternate routes; or utilizing private boat services.

The Hood Canal Bridge retrofit and replacement improves the existing east half, making it wider, safer and more reliable.
