$9 million project could employ as many as 60 workers this year

STANWOOD – Gov. Chris Gregoire and the Washington State Department of Transportation announced today that a much-needed Interstate 5 repair project near Stanwood was advertised to contractors thanks to money from the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act. The project is expected to employ up to 60 workers.

“The Stanwood area project will support much-needed jobs and make important repairs to I-5,” said Paula Hammond, Washington Transportation Secretary.

The $9.2 million project will repair broken concrete panels and smooth bumps along six miles of southbound I-5, between State Route 532 in Snohomish County and Starbird Road in Skagit County. The work will begin this summer and will finish up in spring 2010.

An average of 59,000 vehicles use this stretch of I-5 daily. The road is bumpy and cracked due to its age and high traffic volumes. Repairing the pavement will reduce costly temporary repairs, provide drivers with a safe and smooth ride, and ensure that the roadway will last well into the future.

Washington state is administering the Recovery Act investments with an unprecedented level of transparency and accountability. Gov. Gregoire has created a new website, www.recovery.wa.gov, enabling every Washingtonian to see where their tax dollars are going and hold government accountable for the results. On the federal level, President Obama has appointed Vice President Biden, a proven and aggressive Inspector General, to oversee all state’s recovery efforts and root out waste and fraud. This combined oversight will ensure taxpayer dollars aren’t wasted.
