SEATTLE – Construction to improve traffic flow and safety in Seattle’s SODO neighborhood will require several closures in the next week.
Closures of S. Royal Brougham Way and Third Avenue S. continue as crews move utilities and prepare for construction of a new bridge on S. Royal Brougham Way and new I-90 off-ramp to Edgar Martinez Drive S.
S. Royal Brougham Way
S. Royal Brougham will close at 9 a.m. Monday, April 6, and stay closed until 5 p.m. Friday, April 10. During the closures drivers can access the Qwest Event Center from the west. Drivers should expect continued full and partial closures of S. Royal Brougham until early spring 2010.
Third Avenue S.
Third Avenue S. is closed from S. Royal Brougham Way to just south of Edgar Martinez Drive S. and will remain closed until early spring 2010.
Traffic is being detoured around the S. Royal Brougham Way and Third Avenue S. closures via Fourth Avenue S., Edgar Martinez Drive S. and First Avenue S.
First Avenue S. and S. Atlantic Street/Edgar Martinez Way intersection
On Saturday, April 4, crews completed final paving and striping at the intersection. The previous weekend crews completed widening the intersection to add turn and travel lanes. The new lanes will keep traffic moving at this busy location.
These closures are necessary to build the SR 519 Intermodal Access project. Project improvements will make the corridor safer for drivers, pedestrians and bicyclists, and enhance traffic flow for freight traveling to the Port of Seattle, ferry commuters traveling to Colman Dock, and sports fans heading to the stadiums. The $90.8 million project is funded primarily through the 2003 gas tax and will support an estimated 910 jobs.
