SEATTLE – Contractor crews are looking forward to a sunnier forecast that will allow them to resume 56-hour long weekend work to repair broken concrete panels and restripe roadways to allow for smoother commutes.
This weekend drivers will see lane closures on northbound I-5 between Northgate and 130th Street in north Seattle, westbound SR 520 between 130th Avenue Northeast and 124th Avenue Northeast in Bellevue and eastbound US 2 on the Hewitt Avenue trestle.
By next week commuters will have a new lane to use on US 2 over the trestle.
Weekend construction closures
I-5 north Seattle
Crews will close two of four lanes on northbound I-5 between Northgate and 130th Street from 8 p.m. Friday, April 3 through 5 a.m. Monday, April 6 to replace 46 concrete panels. Drivers will notice a smoother ride with enhanced traction by Monday morning. We expect 45 minute delays through the construction zone during the day.
This $21 million project generates 210 jobs.

SR 520, Bellevue
Crews will close two lanes of three lanes of westbound SR 520 between 130th Avenue Northeast and 124th Avenue Northeast from 11 p.m. Friday, April 3 through 5 a.m. Monday, April 6 to replace broken and cracked concrete bridge approach panels. The broken and cracked panels hasten the wear and tear of the road. We expect up to 30 minute delays through the construction zone during the day.
This $9 million project generates 90 jobs. www.wsdot.wa.gov/projects/sr520/i405towlakesampaving/
US 2 Hewitt Ave. trestle
Crews will reduce traffic to one lane on eastbound US 2 between I-5 and SR 204 from 6 a.m. to noon Saturday and Sunday. Crews will also close the exit to Homeacres Road. Drivers exiting to Homeacres Road will follow a signed detour around the closure. Drivers should choose alternate routes or expect short delays.
WSDOT maintenance workers completed this work for less than $100,000.

Monday commute changes
US 2 Hewitt Ave. trestle
If the weather cooperates, drivers can look forward to more congestion relief across the eastbound US 2 trestle by Monday afternoon. The right shoulder will be open to traffic from 3 p.m. to 7 p.m., Monday through Friday. The shoulder will provide a third lane for drivers and will help improve traffic flow across the trestle and reduce rear-end and side-swipe collisions.
What should drivers do?
Drivers are strongly encouraged to take alternate routes or plan for delays.
Drivers should
- plan for delays on southbound I-5 in north Seattle and north and southbound I-5 in Everett, US 2 in Everett and westbound SR 520 in Bellevue
- check the Web for the latest information before you leave at http://www.wsdot.wa.gov/construction/2009/today
- check the Seattle traffic map to pinpoint and avoid congestion www.wsdot.wa.gov/traffic/seattle
- use the overhead freeway signs and the 511 driver information line to get up-to-the minute information on the road.
