PORT ORCHARD –April showers bring May flowers and the month will also bring an estimated 20 construction-related jobs through a $3.1 million safety improvement project on State Route 160 in Kitsap County.

WSDOT awarded the project earlier this week to R.G./Bowens Construction of Chehalis.

SR 160, known locally as Southeast Sedgwick Road, is the main route for drivers traveling from SR 16 to the Southworth Ferry Terminal. Averaging 20,000 vehicles per day, the route has a history of collisions.

“We are looking forward to a safer corridor,” said WSDOT Olympic Region Administrator Kevin Dayton. “New lighting, additional left-turn lanes, a wider roadway, and flatter side slopes will decrease the severity of collisions involving vehicles leaving the roadway.”

Work begins next month and is scheduled for completion in the fall.
