BURLEY – Weekend-long lane closures on SR 16 in Kitsap County are required to pave the detour route to get drivers around construction of new bridges over Burley Olalla Road.

Drivers can expect westbound SR 16 to be reduced to one lane from 6 p.m. Friday, Nov. 7, until noon Monday, Nov. 10. Five weeks later, the work moves to eastbound SR 16, restricting the roadway to one lane from 6 p.m. Friday, Dec. 12, through 6 a.m. Monday, Dec. 15. Closure dates may change in the event of inclement weather.

Drivers should expect delays from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. Saturday and Sunday when traffic volumes on SR 16 are the highest. WSDOT is recommending drivers go early and stay late if they must travel.

Once the detours are paved, eastbound and westbound traffic shifts off the mainline and onto the detours, which are essentially the new on- and off-ramps to Burley Olalla Road. Shifting SR 16 traffic allows construction of new bridges over Burley Olalla Road to begin.

Crews will reduce the speed limit to 40 mph through the work zone after traffic is shifted onto the ramps. The traffic shift and speed limit reduction will remain in place until the bridges are complete.

This safety project eliminates the last at-grade intersection on SR 16 where traffic crosses the median. When complete in fall 2010, two new bridges will carry SR 16 traffic over Burley Olalla Road. Contractor Ceccanti, Inc. began construction in July.
