LACEY – A project that replaces concrete panels on northbound I-5 in Thurston and Pierce counties requires nighttime double-lane and ramp closures.

Drivers can expect double left-lane closures in Nisqually from 10 p.m. tonight to 1 a.m. Friday. Crews will then shift work and close the two right lanes and the northbound I-5 on-ramp in Nisqually from 1 a.m. to 5 a.m. Friday.

Crews plan to close two left-lanes near Marvin Road overnight Friday and Saturday. The closures are scheduled to occur from 7 p.m. to noon each day, Sept. 26-28.

When complete, 10 new panels will provide a smoother and safer driving surface. Each panel is approximately 10 inches thick, 12 feet wide and 15 feet long. Replacing the panels involves cutting the existing concrete, removing the sections and pouring new concrete.

Many of the concrete panels are 50 years old and have reached the end of their lifespan. Next week, crews will replace panels on I-5 near the SR 512 interchange in Pierce County and work on additional panels in Nisqually. The total cost of the project is $125,000.

This work is weather dependent.
