MOUNT BAKER – The road to Artist Point is open again. Crews reopened the three-mile stretch of road early this morning above the ski resort at the end of Mount Baker Highway (SR 542).

The road was temporarily closed Monday, Sept. 22 after more than 2 inches of snow blanketed the roadway. Crews closed the road for the safety of drivers. Pictures of the snowstorm are available on the WSDOT Flickr account - www.flickr.com/photos/wsdot/sets/72157607451604559/.

Drivers who plan to take a trip up to Artist Point should call the Washington State Department of Transportation at 360-788-2500 to check on road conditions beforehand. At more than 5,000 feet above sea level, the weather conditions change rapidly, and crews may close the road at any point for safety.

The road has been open since July 18, 2008 when crews finished plowing snow off the highway. Pictures of the clearing work are available on the WSDOT Flickr account - www.flickr.com/photos/wsdot/sets/72157605703374272/.
