GLACIER – A new bridge, two roundabouts, realigned sections of road, paving and riverbank protection are just a few of the safety projects planned for Mount Baker Highway (SR 542) in the coming years. People interested in learning more about these projects can attend open houses in Glacier and Deming hosted by the Washington State Department of Transportation.
The most notable project on display at the open houses will probably be the Everson-Goshen to Nugents Corner safety project, which will include two roundabouts at the Smith and Nugents Corner intersections.
Before roundabout planning gets too far along, WSDOT would like show drivers and residents how the designs will change the highway and surrounding properties. Roundabouts will help improve safety and relieve congestion for the 13,000 drivers who use Mount Baker Highway on a daily basis.
Other projects on display at the open houses will include:
- Gallup Creek bridge replacement
- East Church Mountain Road realignment
- Nooksack riverbank stabilization at Warnick Bluff
- Britton Road to Coal Creek Bridge paving
