BURLINGTON – Crews will close one lane and two ramps next week on I-5 in Burlington to begin improvements to the SR 20 interchange. This work is part of the ongoing construction to widen SR 20 between SR 536 (Memorial Highway) and I-5 and to improve the I-5 interchange.

The closures are as follows:

  • 11 p.m. to 5 a.m. nightly, Monday, July 21 through Thursday, July 24 - The northbound on- and off-ramps at exit 230 will be closed.
  • 11 p.m. to 5 a.m. nightly, Tuesday, July 22 through Friday, July 25. - The southbound I-5 left lane at the exit 230 interchange will be closed.

Next week, crews will install waterline and drainage near the northbound ramps, and begin widening I-5 on the southbound side to improve the southbound on- and off-ramps.

WSDOT asks drivers to “Give ‘em a Brake” in work zones or where they see maintenance workers. Giving workers a brake could give you a brake, too. An overwhelming majority of people injured or killed in work zone collisions are drivers and passengers. So slow down, pay attention, and help protect the worker and yourself.

Tips for driving in work zones or where maintenance workers are present:

  • Observe the speed limit and don’t do anything except drive while you’re in the work zone.
  • Don’t use your cell phone.
  • Don’t eat or drink.
  • Don’t change CDs or radio stations.
  • Don’t tailgate. Leave plenty of room between you and the vehicle in front of you.
