MUKILTEO – On Monday, June 16, WSDOT and contractor Granite Northwest Inc. will begin work to repave three miles of highway and complete safety improvements to State Route 526 in Mukilteo. This is the first time that SR 526 has been permanently resurfaced since its original construction in 1968.
“After forty years, the highway is showing signs of aging,” explains Project Engineer Amir Ahmadi. “Repaving three miles of the roadway and completing other improvements will enhance safety and preserve the highway for future use.
Preserving and maintaining SR 526 will help keep traffic moving in Snohomish County. Once a two-lane road, SR 526 is now a major highway that carries an average of 65,000 vehicles each day. Resurfacing the highway will reduce costly and inconvenient repairs.
Work and lane closures begin next week
As part of this project, crews will pave both directions of SR 526 from 40th Ave. W to 5th Ave. W, and the eastbound lanes from 5th Ave. W to Casino Road. Crews will also replace median guardrail with concrete barrier, update signing and pavement markings, replace traffic signals, upgrade lighting and replace a sign bridge.
Lane closures will start as early as Monday night. To keep traffic moving during the day, crews will complete the majority of work during nighttime hours. Throughout the summer, drivers should expect multiple lane and ramp closures on SR 526 from Evergreen Way to 40th Ave. W Sunday through Thursday nights between the hours of 6 p.m. and 7 a.m. Westbound lanes will reopen by 4 a.m. each day to minimize disruptions to traffic during the morning commute. At least one lane in each direction of SR 526 will remain open at all times.
This $10 million project is scheduled for completion in summer 2009. For more information on the project, visit project Web site at: www.wsdot.wa.gov/Projects/SR526/40thAvePaving/
