DECEPTION PASS - WSDOT will continue safety improvements along SR 20 east of Deception Pass to reduce collisions and improve traffic flow. WSDOT has awarded Scarsella Brothers, Inc. of Kent the $11.1 million contract to widen lanes and shoulders and improve intersections between Meadow Creek and Miller/Gibralter roads.
This is the second stage of the project. Drivers who travel the area in the next few weeks will see crews installing high-visibility fencing, signs and erosion control, and clearing the shoulders in preparation for utility work. Drivers should expect minor delays while crews are working next to the road.

During stage two, we will:
• Widen SR 20 between S. Lake Campbell Road and the Miller/Gibraltar Road intersection from 11-foot lanes with two-foot shoulders to 12-foot lanes with 4-foot shoulders,
• Limit traffic on SR 20 to right turns only at the intersection with north Lunz Road,
• Provide a left turn lane at the Almida Vista Road intersection for vehicles heading west on SR 20,
• Provide a left turn lane at the northern intersection of Miller Road for vehicles heading eastbound on SR 20,
• Limit traffic at the southern intersection of Miller Road to right turns onto westbound SR 20 only,
• Smooth out the curve near north Lunz Road and lower the highway just northeast of the southern intersection with Miller Road to increase sight distance.

From Jan. 2002 to June 2007, there were 156 collisions that killed two people and injured 100 others within the project zone.

The Legislature provided $34.3 million for stages one and two of this project. The majority of the project is funded by the 2003 Nickel Funding Package. Marshbank Construction Inc. of Lake Stevens was awarded the contract for stage one of the project last June for their low-bid of $6.1 million.
