OLYMPIA – A rest-area improvement project requires three nights of single-lane closures next week on northbound I-5 south of Olympia.

Crews will close the far right northbound lane, in the vicinity of milepost 90, from 8 p.m. to 5 a.m. Monday through Wednesday. These improvements are part of a $6 million project to upgrade the I-5 Scatter Creek and Maytown rest areas and connect them to the Thurston County sewer system.

In February, contractor Stan Palmer Construction, Inc., began work on both rest areas. Scatter Creek facilities will close June through October, and passenger vehicles will be unable to access the site. Trucks and buses will use the existing truck-parking area.

The Maytown rest area buildings will be closed for upgrades Sept. 16 through Dec. 4. Portable toilet facilities will be on site during the building's closure. The site will remain open to all vehicular traffic except for a brief two-day closure expected in early October.

When the project wraps up in 2009, the rest areas will also have additional recreation-vehicle dump facilities and more truck parking.
