HOQUIAM – A 10-week closure of the US 101 Simpson Avenue Bridge began this morning. During the closure, crews will upgrade the 80-year-old structure.

According to local law enforcement, the detour worked well today and no problems occurred during the morning commute.

"So far it’s been smooth," Hoquiam Police Chief Jeff Myers said.

This $9.2 million project replaces the mechanical and electronic components of the bridge’s drawspan. WSDOT will also replace the control house on top of the bridge, replace the pedestrian barrier, and improve maintenance access. Many of the bridge’s parts are original, dating back to the late 1920s, and in need of rehabilitation.

"We know this bridge is a vital link and the work we’re doing is absolutely necessary to keep the bridge safe and fully operational," said John Hart, project engineer. "The only way to get the work done is with a total bridge closure."

Throughout the project, the 15,000 vehicles that cross the bridge daily are being detoured across the Riverside Bridge, which is temporarily configured for two-way traffic. The detour route is clearly signed and WSDOT staff will monitor public feedback, making adjustments to the detour route as necessary.

This afternoon, a crane was used to remove the control house from the top of the bridge. The control house is being replaced with a replica, while the original - which is a local landmark - will be displayed at a nearby Polson Museum.

"We are excited to display this important part of our town’s history," said Lee Thomasson, Polson Museum Board president.

The new control house will be installed later this week.

Built in 1927, the bridge is an icon in the community and is listed on the National Registry of Historical Places.
