RENTON - Crews will open all lanes of northbound Interstate 405 between State Route 169 and SR 167 in Renton at 5 a.m. Monday, Dec. 16 for the weekday morning commute. The lanes will remain open until 10 a.m. when crews will close the right hand northbound I-405 lane.

This pattern of closing the right hand northbound lane from 10 a.m. until 5 a.m. the next morning will continue for up to two weeks. When the lane is closed, the HOV lane will be open to all traffic, allowing two through lanes on I-405 in the work zone.

During the weekends, the lane closure will be 24 hours a day.

This weekend, crews closed lanes and worked around the clock to lay the pipe for a 2000-foot long pump and drainage system to keep Thunder Hills Creek away from a collapsed culvert that runs under all lanes of I-405. The collapsed culvert caused a sinkhole to open up last week, just 12 feet from the southbound shoulder of I-405.

As the emergency repair work continues, traffic will be congested in the area of the work zone. WSDOT advises drivers to:

  • Know before you go: check the WSDOT Web site at http://www.wsdot.wa.gov/
  • Pay extra attention when driving through work zones
  • Use alternate routes and avoid using I-405
  • Carpool or take transit
  • Consolidate trips as much as possible
  • Arrange with employers to work from home or take time off.
