2008 Cable Median Barrier Report

Safety is a top priority for the Washington State Department of Transportation and the Washington State Patrol. This update confirms that cable median barriers save lives. Where cable has been installed, there has been a 73 percent reduction in median crossover collisions resulting in serious injuries and deaths.

This document updates last year’s report with 2007 collision data and fulfills our commitment to keep monitoring the performance of cable median barriers. The results continue to confirm that cable media barriers are an effective method of reducing median crossover collisions.

What’s new in the 2008 report?

  • WSDOT added 43 miles of cable barrier in 2007. This report analyzes the collision history for all 177 miles of cable barrier for calendar year 2007. We found that with another 12 months of data the downward trend in high-severity collisions remains constant.
  • We give an update of progress toward implementing the recommendations made by Dr. Malcom Ray and include his assessment of WSDOT’s cable median barrier policy and cable barrier performance.
  • We provide an update on the I-5 cable barrier location in Marysville.
  • Looking ahead, we describe new developments taking place in cable barrier technology.
