Demographic data is used to identify minority and low-income populations that may be affected by a project. The analysis is conducted as part of the environmental review required by the National Environmental Policy Act (NEPA).
This web page is designed for a technical audience and provides directions for how to retrieve demographic data.
The EJView Website
The EJView website was developed and maintained by the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA). It uses data from the U.S. Census Bureau and the American Community Survey to calculate demographic data through a geospatial map interface.
The Federal Highway Administration (FHWA) has agreed that reports generated using this website are sufficient demographic documentation for CE and DCE level projects. Additional data may be needed for EA and EIS level projects.
Use Adobe Flash Player to view the training videos. The videos are listed in a specific sequence because you must enter the project information in this order for the website to generate accurate reports.
School Data Website
FHWA requires verification of demographic data because Census Data is only collected every ten year. The preferred secondary data source is school demographic data. The Office of the Superintendent of Public Instruction (OSPI) website is updated annually and provides detailed information about schools in Washington State.
