Dedicated ferry lane coming to State Route 305 on Bainbridge Island

UPDATE: Work to complete traffic revisions has been rescheduled for Tuesday, June 11, due to weather. The change is reflected in the release below.

Change brings traffic revisions to two key intersections in Winslow

BAINBRIDGE ISLAND – Travelers who drive onto the Bainbridge Island ferry will soon have a lane all to themselves on southbound State Route 305 approaching Winslow.

On Tuesday, June 11, Washington State Department of Transportation crews will revise traffic along the roadway. The changes will create a dedicated right lane (PNG 260KB) for vehicle ferry traffic from north of Winslow Way to the terminal entrance.

In addition to new pavement markings and signs, the changes will include new traffic signal displays and turn restrictions at the Winslow Way and Harborview Drive intersections.

"The community and ferry travelers have asked for these changes for some time. Recent upgrades to our traffic light technology are allowing us to complete the work now," said WSDOT Transportation Engineer Keith Kirkendall.

What to expect

On June 11, travelers will see single lane closures on southbound SR 305 approaching Winslow Way 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. During the closures crews will install new signs, pavement markings and traffic signal displays.

The work is scheduled during daytime hours. This is when driver behavior is generally safer and crews and work zone signs are more easily seen.

Travelers are advised to go early or wait until after work is complete to avoid congestion during lane closures.

After work is complete

  • Travel in the right lane on southbound SR 305 approaching Winslow will be restricted to vehicle ferry traffic.
  • Turns from southbound SR 305 on to Winslow Way and Harborview Drive will be restricted to the left lane.
  • Right turn on red will be prohibited from SR 305 at both Winslow Way and Harborview Drive.
  • Right turns will be prohibited from Winslow Way to the dedicated ferry lane on southbound SR 305.

Traffic revisions are in effect as soon as work is completed. There are no changes to routes for transit services, walkers and rollers approaching the ferry terminal. Routes for drivers accessing self-parking areas and the pedestrian ferry terminal on Winslow Way are not affected.

Bainbridge ferry terminal overhead pedestrian loading closures

Work is also ramping up on the final elements of a new overhead walkway at the Bainbridge ferry terminal. Plan for boarding and offloading delays, as all walk-on passengers will occasionally load and unload via the car deck.

Slow down – lives are on the line.

In 2023, speeding continued to be a top reason for work zone crashes.

Even one life lost is too many.

Fatal work zone crashes doubled in 2023 - Washington had 10 fatal work zone crashes on state roads.

It's in EVERYONE’S best interest.

95% of people hurt in work zones are drivers, their passengers or passing pedestrians, not just our road crews.
